Laser/IPL Eyewear

It is absolutely imperative that all users and patients of lasers and IPL systems wear the appropriate protective eyewear. In Europe this is a legal stipulation all such eyewear must comply with the laser protection requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive.

As of 1997 all laser protective eyewear sold in Europe has to be certified to the BS EN 207:2009 Personal eye-protection equipment - Filters and eye-protectors against laser radiation (laser eye-protectors) Standard to be legal.

Likewise, in the UK there now exists a safety standard for IPL safety eyewear - BS 8497-1:2008 - Eyewear for protection against intense light sources used on humans and animals for cosmetic and medical applications (specification for products) and BS 8497-2:2008 - Eyewear for protection against intense light sources used on humans and animals for cosmetic and medical applications (guidance on use).

WARNING - It should be pointed out that many Chinese suppliers of laser and IPL equipment do not supply safety eyewear which complies with the above standards. Hence, these products CANNOT be legally (or safely) used in any salon/clinic in the UK!! See my article for more information.
